RAPTOR Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation education through raptor rehabilitation and community engagement. Our primary business location is in Milford, OH. In 2024, we aided over 400 birds of prey from 33 counties in Ohio and Kentucky.

Position

The RAPTOR Inc. Director of Avian Operations is responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of RAPTOR Inc.’s activities related to the medical treatment and rehabilitation of admitted birds of prey from throughout our covered region, Southern Ohio and Northern Kentucky, in addition to the oversight of the medical care of our education birds. This role will shadow the incumbent through January 31, 2026, with full authority and responsibility after that date.

The Director will also participate in and support our research work to increase knowledge of raptor biology, disease processes, and treatment protocols, and increase our field research contributions by monitoring local nesting populations and banding birds.

The role is a full-time position, 40 hours of work per week, and will require evening and weekend work. Compensation will range from $40,000 - $50,000, based on experience. The Director of Avian Operations will be entitled to three (3) weeks of paid vacation and five (5) days of paid sick time. No company-paid health insurance benefits are available.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the rehabilitation of admitted birds from initial treatment through release back to nature, ensuring that all rehabilitation standards and protocols are followed. Serve as the primary liaison with RAPTOR Inc.’s veterinarian partners.
  • Monitor the health and behavior of our education birds to ensure their long-term well-being.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, schedule, and supervise interns and volunteer assistants involved in rehabilitation work, at RAPTOR Inc., including weekend bird care activities. Use approved procedures and training materials when training volunteers and ensure their compliance. In addition, utilize courses and workshops available through the OWRA, IWRC, and NWRA rehabilitation organizations to develop volunteers into fully competent rehabilitators.
  • Maintain valid rehabilitation and education permits with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Maintain necessary documentation, generate required reports, and meet all other requirements to ensure that RAPTOR Inc. bird care is compliant with federal and state regulations and requirements. Maintain the Animal Welfare Act Standards for Birds with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 
  • Write and maintain policies and procedures related to the rehabilitation of raptors in the care of RAPTOR Inc.
  • Participate in and support RAPTOR Inc.’s research studies and activities to sustain and advance our conservation efforts and mission.
  • Participate in training courses, trade organizations, and other technical exchanges to stay abreast of new techniques, treatments, and methodologies related to raptor rehabilitation.
  • Manage medical supply and food procurement for birds in care.
  • Write a monthly report to the board, attend board meetings, and submit a quarterly article/bird care report for the newsletter.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise volunteers involved with the transport and release of healthy raptors back into the wild.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge, expertise, and experience to competently care for and rehabilitate injured, orphaned, and sick raptors admitted to our care, particularly those species that are native to the Greater Cincinnati, OH region.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent knowledge gained from relevant training and experience.
  • The management skills required to direct, train, and supervise a team of interns and volunteer assistants involved in the rehabilitation work at RAPTOR Inc.
  • Willingness and commitment to participate in continuing education activities to stay abreast of new rehabilitation techniques, treatments, and methodologies.
  • Competent command of Microsoft Office and other standard computer software applications.
  • Requires a flexible schedule for emergent issues that may occur outside of business hours or on weekends.
